Founded by Alison Dell and Irina Ellison in 2015, Art in the Lab promotes crosstalk between art and science through free public workshops where participants engage in authentic laboratory experiences and create art inspired by interaction with scientific collections.
Each workshop begins with an introduction to lab and art techniques related to the event’s theme. In addition to lab-work, we draw together - short warm-up drawings are followed by longer drawings to allow unhurried engagement with the subject matter. All participants have an opportunity to display work at our annual exhibition.
Biologists by training, Dell and Ellison hold faculty positions at St. Francis College and Mercy College. The academic labs of both institutions house robust collections of teaching slides and models. In being able to both access these collections and make them accessible - we are delighted and grateful for the support each college has shown to the project.
Curiosity, inclusiveness and fun are cornerstones that support the atmosphere of the events. We invite everyone to engage with and re-claim science through art.
See you at the next Art in the Lab!
